Appearance:
Women in the Weyrguard have to be tall and strong. While not as thick as some of the other guards(male and female), Tafren is tall, topping at 6'1'', and fully capable of tossing a good sized male out of the room with just physical strength. Add in the solid, sturdy stance and facial expression meant to terrify, and most people don't bother to mess with her on duty. She has dark brown hair, with lighter tints(which are becoming more prominent at Nova Weyr), cut short, and often shaggy. Unless on duty, in a uniform provided by the Weyr(of Telgarian Blue: for now at least), Tafren puts no effort into clothing, or hair.
When on duty, she slicks her hair down, drawing attention to her light brown and green eyes, pert nose, and well defined jaw. You can even see that she has fairly arched eyebrows, and that blue is very much her color.
Off duty, you are more likely to see her cheeks flushed red from laughter or sport, her hair a mess, and her clothing an odd assortment of shirts, and pants. She doesn't wear dresses, except when pregnant, but she doesn't like to talk about that.
She's very fit, and unless standing guard, always in motion. She has an open, honest face, and rarely lies, preferring to tell the blunt, honest truth. Her voice is low, and tends to be loud. She's used to commanding situations, and in a crisis, she'd probably the first to turn too, mostly because she's loud, unruffled looking, and knows exactly what to do. She just is the kind of person people trust.
Personality:
Many people think the Weyrguard is all men. It's not. While most of the Guard is male, there aren't enough men to do all of the jobs required of the Weyrguard. Thus, women who can keep up with the physical demands are allowed into the Guard.
Tafren meets both the physical requirements, and the mental. She's smart, retains information, and commanding. Thrown into any situation(Firefight, Avalanche, Threadfall, Storm, Evacuation, etc), Tafren can round up untrained Crafters, Holders, Traders, and Weyrfolk, and get them up to whatever challege is facing them. As a member of the Weyrguard, she's been a go between Ground Crew and Wings, and helped create a viable force during an avalanche near Telgar Hold, and was once sent to Fort Weyr to help devise a plan to put out a forest fire using Dragons and Holders. She's a leader, and a thinker, and she's tough as nails, and completely loyal to whomever is in charge.
Her trust is easily given, and not to easy to break. She likes to think the best of people, even when they fail, so long as they try. She's a loud woman, with a hearty laugh, and a love of men and wine, and an all around good time. She's not as fond of children, though she likes hers well enough, and has high wishes for both of them.
She's always wanted to be in the Weyrguard, and failing to Impress was simply further proof that she belonged there. She was well liked her for dedication, and her ability to not play favorites. The fact that she is tall, and imposing helped as well. When told she was moving to a new Weyr, Tafren didn't bother to question orders, and merely did what she was told too.
Now, she's had a chance to puzzle out why she might have been sent, and has decided it is because she has experience working with Holders, and because she is best suited for any natural disaster that might strike them while they are in the past, and unable to call for assistance. Or because they knew she wouldn't chatter about anything, and she is willing to have children. In any case, she is working hard to make the best Weyr ever.
She's not one for romantic relationships. This has to do with several factors. First off, her parents were weirdly close, and her mother insisted on raising all of her children without fostering out or in a child. This seemed counter to Weyr ideals, and Tafren doesn't want to run counter to the Weyr she loves. It also clouds one's judgment, and can make you less likely to be honest. And then, most of the men who don't automatically assume she likes girls, generally aren't the settling down types.
Currently, she's fine with that, but like all things in life, it's subject to change.
History:
In Telgar Weyr, like most Weyrs use Fostering to create a society where your loyalty to the Weyr is more important than loyalty to your family. This is done by creating such a large family(including birthparents, fosterparents, fostersibings and blood siblings, and more distant relationships on all sides), that you have no choice but to be bound by family to the Weyr.
It is a good, and smart system, allowing for children to be placed with the most suitable adults for taking care of them, and allows for better knowledge of who lives in a Weyr. However, some families simply do not follow the Fostering System, no matter what they are told.
Tafren's family was one of those families.
Teyren, Tafren's mother, started as a candidate who never Impressed. She was, however, impressed by a male candidate, and they entered a relationship. He Impressed to a blue dragon, but after Weyrling Training , returned to her, and other than Flights which both learned to discount, they remained together, loyal to each other in all ways(Both were Holdbred, which might explain something).
Teyren refused to foster out any of her children, hating to even leave them in the creche for very long, and as soon as they were old enough to be by themselves for longer than an hour, she stopped taking them their, leaving all of the children she produced together in her rooms(she'd traded favors and bribes to get a two room set up).
When Tafren and her brothers and sisters grew old enough to start wandering around the Weyr, they found themselves woefully lacking in understanding social cues. Each of the siblings reacted differently, ranging from her older sister's well known temper, and her younger sister's almost complete solitude. Tafren, herself, merely grew louder and more totally extroverted. That worked for her, and she made friends, but deep in her mind, it merely accented why the fostering system worked best, and she had no intention of doing what her mother had done if she had children.
At fourteen(which was the time female's generally started Standing at Hatchings), Tafren became a candidate, but never truly fell prey to Dragon Fever. Her youngest brother did, and so did her older sister, but of the two, only the youngest Impressed, leaving him A'lyren, the only second dragonrider in their family.
Tafren entered in training as a Weyrguard, finding a deep abiding passion inside of her for taking care of the Weyr. And she was good at it, too. When she showed a good grasp of how to show untrained folk what to do case of emergency(and later, when Thread Started, what to do when acting as Ground Crew), she started being sent all across Pern, assisting other Weyrguards(who only answered to the Headwomen of their Weyrs, and often accepted help from other Weyrs) in Wildfires, Forestfires, low level epidemics, during the sickness, water drops(where Dragons dropped water to drought stricken areas, though she never assisted in Igen), and even in Avalanches(she detested these, as the Weyrguard was often too late to help).
Somehow, thoughout this time, she managed to give birth to three children, who she loved enough to give up to Foster care. She also was given rank within the Weyrguard, with a possibility of one day reaching Captain of the Weyrguard, the only real official rank of the Weyrguard. But it was known she could be allowed to lead, and get things done, and she was happy with her life, of both extreme duty, and extreme fun.
And then, she was asked to pack up and move. When they said she was going to a new Weyr, she thought that one of the other Weyrs had lost a number of Weyrguards, and needed a boost, she she packed up, and was ready to go in an hour.
And then, a few days later, she found herself two hundred turns in the past, in a new Weyr called Nova, and only a few other Weyrguards. For now, there has been no reason to decide on a Captain(which only the Weyrguard can decide on), but a some point, someone will have to stand up and take the Rank. It seems like the general agreement is for Tafren, but she isn't sure enough to ask.
And as of yet, she doesn't need too, not when the only duties of the Weyrguard are to stand guard at Meetings, and watch for Fights.
The Hold hasn't called for them yet, and they don't need to organize Ground Crew for there is no Thread. As she readjusts to living in a Thread-Free World, Tafren is taking advantage of the down time, and has been dancing her life away.
It's nice, but she can't wait for duty to begin again. It's what the life of a Weyrguard is about, after all.
