Character Info:
Name: Kalos
Age: 27
Gender: male
Rank: weyrfolk / bookie
Location Nova Weyr
Family: Kamria, mother, 49, lower caverns woman
D'los, father, 52, bluerider
Dria, sister, 24, lower caverns woman
K'rol, brother, 21, greenrider
Appearance: Kalos is not and has never been beautiful, no matter how you look at him. His face is sharp and angular, his nose is long, narrow, and hawkish, his shaggy hair is mouse brown and his eyes are a muddy, not-quite hazel colour and just a little too small for his face. He is thin-lipped, with high, prominent cheekbones, and of a noteworthy height, though his build is gangly and, at his age, looks to be gangly until the day he dies.
Despite his less-than-perfectly-appealing physique, however, there is something genuinely sweet and impishly charming about the roguish man. He is quick to smile, a cheerful and easy-going expression that never seems to leave his eyes. There is an air of mischeif about the man, evident in his posture and gestures.
Personality: Always the scalawag and rogue, Kalos takes great pride in his ability to keep up the demeanour of being a charming, harmless scamp. With years of practice maintaining this exterior, Kalos has nearly perfected the ability to keep his opinions almost perfectly to himself, and only very, very rarely places any genuine trust in anyone. A master flirt without preference one way or the other to gender, it is extraordinarily rare that anyone actually catches evidence of Kalos spending the night with any of his flirt partners.
In truth, Kalos has never hesitated to enjoy a bit of willing company, preferably of the female variety, though he won't object to a pretty male, either, but this, like all other major aspects of his life, is something he secrets away in a tidy little box. Though he'd never admit it to any of the Telgar riders, on some levels, he agrees with Igen about female riders--he cannot bring himself to view them as acceptable on brown or blue dragons. On the same token, though no Igen rider would ever hear it, he was rather fond of female green riders, especially once they had a flight or two under their belts. He tends to find them particularly cuddly and pliant, then, which is perfectly alright with him.
History: Kalos was born in Igen Weyr and spent his whole life around dragonriders, watching them. When he got older, the issue of candidacy arose, but no dragon really thought he was all that suitable, and, indeed, he never did impress. He did, however, learn from what he saw there, and he did not waste what he learned. Kalos had no wish to spend the rest of his life in the lower caverns, wasting away running errands, and, to be totally honest with himself, he didn't particularly want to work in any proper manner, either, so, instead, Kalos took the opportunity of the clutch second failed candidacy to open up some betting books using money he'd stashed over the past few years.
The betting business, as it turned out, was very lucrative, and so, to his father's dismay, Kalos never did become a rider, but began specializing in maintaining betting books for everything relating to dragons under the sun, from the color of unhatched eggs to the winner of flights. Over time, Kalos became rather adept at stacking the odds in his favour, and his easy, friendly manner made him a welcome addition and wonderful stress relief to everyone in the Weyr. His official status, of course, was 'handyman', though he was never particularly handy with anything, but that little fact was easy to overlook, in the grand scheme of things.
When it came time to settle Nova, it was no stretch at all for the ruffian bookie to help keep spirits high in any project the Weyr might have for him. After all, helping was generally more lucrative. Besides, Kalos was beginning to suspect that he wouldn't be able to keep not knowing about any children for much longer, and he really, really, really didn't want to know about any children.
