Character Info:
Name: K'lain (Kellain)
Age: 16
Gender: m
Rank: weyrling
Location Star Hold / Nova Weyr
Family: Father - Relain (n/a - see history)
Mother - Keana (wife/mother)
Step-Father - Roval (farmcrafter)
Sister - Keare (14, unbetrothed)
Sister - Roana (12, betrothed)
Brother - Kero (9, child)
Brother - Neval (6, child)
Sister - Valana (2, child)
Appearance: Kellain, like his sister Keare, has the pale skin that marks them as being northern bred. He is of a middling height, with small bones and a slight build, which does little to lend masculinity or maturity to his appearance. His hair is ashen, bound into a loose tail at the nape of his neck, and falls to the middle of his back. His efforts with it are haphazard, at best, giving him a scruffy demeanor. Grey eyes, a narrow nose, high cheekbones, and a jawline just strong enough to spare him from femininity make up his features. Long limbs and slender, calloused hands cap off his appearance.
Kellain has not (fortunately for him) reached his full growth yet, and is hoping to fill out more as time goes on. It seems unlikely by the size of his wrists that he'll ever be broad in any way, but the whipcord muscles visible just under his skin should spare him from ever being too effeminate. All in all, however, he comes across more as an absentminded accidental rogue than the somber philosopher that is more true to his nature.
Personality: The oldest child is often the most responsible, and Kellain is no exception. When his mother took his sister and him to Star Hold, he was just old enough that he can, if he strains, remember it, something his sister cannot say, and even from a young age, he considered the girl to be his responsibility. When Keana and Roval married within a handful of months of arriving at Star Hold (a hasty gesture to cover up Keana's pregnancy), Kellain was not happy, and when Roana was born, he and Keare took a back seat to their mother's new family. Though he knew, on some level, that it was accidental on her part, and that she did love them both very dearly, it hurt, and for Kellain, it was evidence that Keare needed his protection. He loves her very dearly, and of all his relatives, she is the only one he was particularly loathe to leave when he was searched for Nova Weyr.
Though Kellain spent much of his childhood being more adult than his age properly permitted, directing children until his sister was old enough to do it and being the adult when his mother was pregnant or busy, he is also often doubtful of his own decisions, questioning himself later, and is very, very hard on himself about fairness. Though he's never stylized himself a philosopher, that is easily the best word for him. Much of his free time is spent wandering in whatever places are free to wander, contemplating ethics, the social system, and morality, among other topics. Kellain would never admit it, and often covers it up with a practiced scalawag grin, but he is much more somber than even he properly realizes, and these matters can and often do bother him.
History: Keana was married young to a man she didn't know as well as she thought she did, and within a year, had grown to detest him. By the time Keare was was born, Keana was willing to take any excuse to leave that she could find, and the Star Hold expedition was a perfect opportunity. Taking both children, she took off for the secret venture, telling the other participants that her husband had died. So many had that it wasn't an unbelievable story, and she was much happier for it. Kellain barely remembers any of this.
Not long after arriving in Star Hold, Keana met Roval, and their hasty marriage to cover Keana's accidental pregnancy left a sour taste in her oldest child's mouth. Keana did love both her children by her first husband, but despite her best efforts, her preference for her new family was evident even to a child as young as Kellain, and he became extremely protective of his younger sister. As he grew older, he took on more and more responsibilities above what someone his age should have been taking on, with little protest, and as he grew old enough to assist Roval, he was forced to give more and more of those responsibilities to Keare and take on new ones under Roval.
Ironically, despite his protectiveness of Keare, and the closeness he feels toward her, he has always suspected (and is, to some degree, correct in his suspicion) that Keare does not want to be protected and does not feel nearly as close to him as he feels to her. However, though she doesn't know it, much of the backlash she should have been feeling for being fourteen and unbetrothed, Kellain has been intercepting. With him leaving, he is very, very concerned about this.
Kellain, it was expected, would follow in Roval's footsteps, a fate he felt no particular interest in pursuing, so, when presented with the opportunity to stand for Nova Weyr, he admitted that he would be of far more use to everyone (and much happier in his own right) as a dragonrider than he would as a reluctant farmercrafter.
After arriving late on the sands, Kellain begged a brief overview of what was expected of him from a fellow candidate, and, before he knew it, was faced with the shattering of eggs. The first to hatch, though by no means first to impress, was a large, sturdy brown, and when Mnemoth did finally choose his rider, Kellain became K'lain.

Dragon Info:
Name: Mnemoth
Age: hatchling
Color: brown
Appearance: A dark, rich brown, he has a few noticeably lighter spots, particularly the tip of his tail and the underside of his wings. He is on the larger side of average for a brown. Mnemoth's claws are a darker shade than his hide. Solidly built, with a sturdy gait even for his age and a particularly long, stout tail. The hatchling holds himself with quiet confidence despite his age.
Personality: Mnemoth isn't one to act impulsively. He prefers to take things slowly and examine his options. Unusual for a dragon, he does sometimes think of the future and past. Though these moments are rare, it is no doubt because his rider thinks quite a lot about a number of things. Mnemoth likes being right and proving others wrong. He is a steadfast friend and enjoys the company of other dragons, so long as they aren't too chatty.
Like his rider, he tends to adopt a friendly, easygoing manner, but much of this is purely habit born of exposure to his rider's demeanour, and, thanks to K'lain's more somber thoughts, so often flicking through Mnemoth's mind, the dragon has a very serious and somber outlook on the world.
