Verdyn, (3) daughter of Gwyn (@ Telgar Weyr)
Appearance:
K'dyn isn't tall for a man, at 5'11". He hasn't the looks that many dragon riders boast. Not that he isn't attractive, he is. However its not the drop dead gorgeous attractive that many riders are. He has the body, for he works out every day. His dark hair and tan complexion make him darker than the average Pernese. He is considered interesting looking. He has a long nose and slightly cleft chin. His eyes are brown and his eyebrows thick and dark.
Generally he looks serious but he usually is far from it.These past few Turns have shown his age more. He has wrinkles at the corners of his eyes. His skin is a little drier from flying thread in more severe conditions. Since his hair has decided that it was time to recede, K’dyn tries to shave it down to where it is nearly bald.
Because of his complexion, his smiles look whiter. He has all his teeth and has taken great care with them. He'd never want to be seen with brown teeth, falling out of his head. Ewwww. His lips are full and actually probably one of his handsomer features.
He wears his leathers nearly everyday, drills or no drills. His other clothes are simple. A loose fitting shirt and a pair of pants. If he has a pair of pants that don't look ten turns old it'll be a miracle. At Gathers and Feasts he wears his one nice outfit. A red wine tunic with black pants. This outfit does a lot for him but he otherwise dresses like he just doesn't care what he is wearing.
Personality:
Most of the time, K’dyn is a smart ass. He can annoy the most patient of people if he wants to. Often he takes pride in irritating others. There are times though when he tires of pranking and wants nothing more than to take a quiet day lying by the lake. These days are few and far between. K’dyn is a spirited person. He can go days without sleep and has inordinate amounts of energy. When something upsets this system, he can sleep for twenty four hours straight. For several days after he can be a bit melancholy. Things that would trigger this would be mostly on an emotional basis. If something were to be done to his pride or his dragon.
He isn’t exactly moody and is usually an optimist. While he hopes thread won’t return he gets the feeling it will. After all, when did anyone start caring what he wanted? In the Weyr Brownriders are known for their patience and dependable natures, K’dyn is the exception. He has about as much patience as a new hatchling wanting food. As for being dependable, its not that no one can trust him, its that he is very very careful in whom he places trust and who he receives trust. If someone were to misplace their trust in him, he would probably play one prank or another on him.
He doesn’t flirt with women usually, though he is a heterosexual. In fact he is rather odd for a Weyrbred man. K’dyn has a constant nature when it comes to love. He has found this in his weyrmate of about ten turns, Gwynhaver. Though he isn't one for public displays of affection, he does care deeply for her.
History:
Koldyn has been a Weyrbrat since the day he was born. No his parents were not dragon riders. He didn't really care much. As with many people in the Weyr, family came second to the Weyr. The Weyr was your true family. His mother did care for him along with a couple other foster children, who more than likely had dragon riding parents. He also was raised with his two sisters. He reveled in playing tricks on them.
Koldyn grew into an adventurous young boy. He explored every inch of the Weyr, often when his mother had gone to sleep. He never really needed sleep, and often found while other people were sleeping, his mind and body were still full of energy. While on one such exploratory mission, the youth found himself on the Hatching Sands. The Queen, Beynath lay guarding her clutch. The boy had never given much thought to dragon riding before that moment. The Gold saw him. He knew she did because she looked directly at him; blue multifaceted eyes met his own. It could have been seconds or centuries that passed in that moment. From that moment onward, he wanted to impress a dragon.
If he had been a smart boy he would have gotten out ofd the cavern before anyone else saw, unfortunately his eight turn old self was not that bright in the ways of the world. Weyrwoman Marisol had also seen him and beckoned him forward. "She won't flame you boy. Come closer." Her voice was almost as commanding as her sheer presence. When he finally came close enough, she spoke again. "You must be only a few turns younger than my grandson. What is your name boy?"
Koldyn was nervous, under the beautiful eyes of a commanding woman, "My lady... I uh... didn't mean." She waved him off and stopped him from continuing, "Your name?"
"Koldyn." She smiled at him.
"Well, Koldyn, it does seem that neither of us can sleep tonight."
The boy nodded, and thus was the beginning of his obsession with dragons. Marisol knew more about them than most and she soon got him hooked on the idea that he could impress and should stand when he was a good age for it.
Little encounters such as that one were the highlights of his childhood. Even as he wished to enjoy being a child, he often dreamed of being an adult and riding a handsome dragon and living life without chores or lessons. Like many Weyrbrats before him, Koldyn felt that Dragonriding would be his life and thus he never pursued a craft.
Koldyn matured slower than some of the other boys his age. He wasn't a flirt or even that interested in girls. He wasn't interested in boys either. He found himself behind the curve. After a couple turns he thought it must be for the better. Many of his friends had not only suffered heart break but often a loss in confidence. Women were trouble and he learned very quickly that he didn't want that kind of trouble.
At sixteen he stood for his first hatching, he was finally mature and ready to take on the challenge that was dragonriding. White robes augmented his skin tone and her felt that he had been born to stand there. Candlemarks may have passed in the time it took for the first egg to hatch. The crowds were so loud that Koldyn had drowned them out. The only thing that mattered were the eggs. A couple greens hatched then a blue and a brown. All of them found mates without a pause. He was beginning to feel some self doubt but instead of giving into it, he defiantly looked up at Gold Adeloth, all the while thinking, he was worthy of a dragon.
Another brown and blue passed him by. It was near the end of the Hatching when the fourth brown of the clutch hatched. He was the last to leave his shell. While not the largest brown, he was certainly not small either. He seemed perfect to most onlookers, his proportions were exactly as they were supposed to be and he exited his shell with a sturdiness expected of browns. He'd make a fine addition to the wings. While the young brown was under scrutiny by the crowds, he was evaluating the Candidates. Instead of being patient, as most brown were he found himself pushing past the Candidates who weren't quick enough to move.
Blue green eyes met Koldyn's and he felt a wave of inexplicable happiness. K'dyn, I am Ortath and I am hungry. The Brown nudged him forward, making sure he was moving. COME ON! I said I was hungry! The boy looked at him, mouth agape. He quickly shut it, following the brown quickly, while shouting, "HIS NAME IS ORTATH!"
Weyrlinghood went by surprisingly fast; K'dyn was constantly joking around and often finding himself his class clown. The Weyrlingmaster grew tired of him often. K'dyn loved to pick on the man and found himself loaded with extra chores. Not that he minded. Less time to spend on working out. It wasn't like he had many other pursuits.
The prankster graduated on time, thankfully. The Weyrling master had often threatened to leave him behind a class. Ortath was much too sturdy a flier to hold back, however, so they were tapped for Zahra Wing. In the three turns they have been with Zahra they have maintained an intense loyalty to the wing and even call some of the others his friends. He would never openly be friends with a woman, so some of the green riders might feel uncomfortable with him. As before, he still thinks women are trouble.
His sister impressed to Gold Sheluth in Turn 1054. He was seeing a green rider in his wing, Kanoni, but it lasted only a Turn. She was severely ill during the second plague though K'dyn himself was immune. The brown rider continued to impress his superiors which went unacknowledged till recently when he was chosen for a special mission back through time. He and a group of dragon riders and children would be timing it to grown these children up to be of Candidate age when the next hatching at Telgar would occur. They would be gone a turn but in reality they would have aged ten. He is not thrilled about this, because he was finally settled and happy. He had something going and now he would be missing out on it.
The only thing good about this mission? He would be Wing second... second in command! That was rather exciting. Ortath and he would enjoy that. The ten turns spent back in time, gave K'dyn a new persective. He was actually good with kids and he could even do things now that had nothing to do with dragonriding. His bond with Ortath was much stronger and he even found that he enjoyed being away. He had finally settled in it seemed when it was time to go home again.
When he came back to Telgar, he found that he was changed but almost everyone else he knew hadn't. His sister was no Junior Weyrwoman of Telgar which only made him slightly miffed. The reason being, that a dragon had to fly hers and the man responsible would have to face K'dyn a lot. That person of course was R'net, the leader of their little expedition. How he was even back during the flight, K'dyn will never know but he finds a little tricky for a Triveni rider.
After a few sevendays, K'dyn got used to the old way of things. He was doing just great, actually better than great now that he didn't have those brats hanging about. In truth he was lonely and worse than that he was too stubborn to go looking for company. The kids still had one another, R'net had Neory... and he was alone with Ortath. Thankfully the brown cared little for this sullen mood of his rider. He took the opportunity to scout out who was where and what dragons were flying.
The brown had a couple favorites when it came to flying greens. After being close to abstinent for a little over ten turns, Ortath gave chase. K'dyn could not be angry with the brown as he walked toward the rider of the green. He wasn't sure how Gwyn would deal with this. In fact he was pretty sure she'd want someone else to fly her and Aurath now. Ortath had no doubts which quickly calmed K'dyn's nerves.
The brown and he merged well for that flight and as such, he found himself in the arms of Gwyn after ten turns of not seeing her. Though he supposed it was not so long for her. It was after flying Aurath many times and through the encouragement of his sister, he finally asked Gwynhaver to be his weyrmate... as if she wasn't already acting as just that.
He realized that no matter how much he had done for the Weyr, it was always going to ask for more whereas with Gwynhaver, she gave back. He began to understand real love, though he was still rather slow when it came to romance. Their first child was born about a turn after, a daughter named Golwyn. A son followed a couple turns later and then three more. K'dyn has been a good father by weyr standards and though he can't raise his children he gets to see them for dinner when he doesn't have night watch or meetings.
He was promoted to Wingthird when his youngest was born. Zahra Wing always seemed short of Bronzers but it wouldn't last long. He was again promoted and before he knew it, he was Wingsecond. Added responsibility meant less time with Gwynhaver and the children, although it also meant he was well respected and trusted with important things. When he was called to another "secret" meeting he became very nervous. Neory was there, Elisha, R'net and some other riders though there couldn't have been more than thirty that he knew. There was also a petite dark eyed woman, who gave him the chills and the man beside her didn't look any friendlier for all they were a handsome pair.
He left feeling so completely used. K'dyn had served the Weyr fighting thread, going back in time, giving up time he could have with people he loved to risk his life and limb for Pern and they had the gall to tell him... not even ask!...that he was going to a new Weyr, back in time, on the southern continent. He couldn't even tell Gwyn. She was supposed to assume he died. With a heavy heart he went home and while he tried to keep his melancholy under control, he couldn't.
Gwyn knew something was up and as always she somehow convinced him to tell her something she shouldn't have had to hear. what he told her was he had to go, back in time, again but this time he wouldn't be coming back to Telgar. This time he was going to be asked to leave his family behind. When it came time for him to leave, Ortath "accidentally" gave Aurath their coordinates.
Having recently arrived at Nova, K'dyn already misses his weyrmate and children. He is happy to be with his sister and long time friend R'net. The two cold strangers at the meeting were introduced to him upon his arrival as the other Goldrider and her mate from Igen. The pair of them gave him the chills. K'dyn had other things to worry about than the Igen riders. He had been promoted to Wingsecond for this mission, of Procyron wing. He had more experience than some of the Bronzers and he took responsibility to heart.

Dragon Info:
Name: Ortath
Age: 29 Turns
Color: Brown
Appearance: A well proportioned and sturdy dragon. Ortath is a standard for dragons; his hide is mahogany brown with reddish highlights on his wing tips and on his eye ridges. He is of average size and his proportionate body makes him look nearly perfect. If only that meant more agility...instead he is mostly a very good at endurance flying.
Personality:
Ortath is pushy, energetic and a bit of a smart ass. Much like his rider he finds that people can be rather annoying especially females. He enjoys flying, swimming and sunning on ledges now and again, though he'd rather be on the go.
He'd rather have a herd beast for supper than a wherry. Something about the red meat that he refuses to share with his rider. He hates being oiled. The smell and feel of it, makes him nauseated. However, K'dyn makes sure the dragon does get oiled, during their weyrlinghood it was a real pain.
History: Once all the others had hatched the Brown made his entrance. He knew what he wanted and enjoyed the attention he was getting when he exited the shell. Their were no Bronzes or Golds to take the attention away from him. As if he weren't as good as a Bronze. The sturdy brown pushed through some Candidates. Morons needed to learn to move out of his way. He found him, right where he thought he would be.
After this event, the brown did eat and then he was supposed to sleep like the other but stayed up with his new rider until he finally felt tired. It was not long before he was awake again. The two made it through Weyrlinghood, mostly due to Ortath's flying and K'dyn's memorization skills. They hated lesson and often found themselves daydreaming they were adult riders already.
As Wing riders they are a good partnership in an excellent team. Their Wing is their family. Ortath rarely speaks to a dragon outside of his wing mates.
Ortath's hide grew worse and worse until the pair had to be grounded. Thankfully Dragon Healer Daevon worked out a solution to be used instead of oil. The dragon seemed not to have allergies to this and it has been working well enough to get the pair aloft again.
They have now won numerous green flights, though Ortath prefers to fly Aurath. During his first time away from everyone when they went back, Ortath grew accustomed to only flying a green very rarely. It was akward, even he could feel that. Coming back was the same, he didn't fly anyone, not till Aurath. Since then he had only wanted to fly her. She had always been a favorite of his.
Going back in time again does not make the dragon nervous but he does think that he is missing something. K'dyn's feeling of loss, seems to be getting to his brown.
