Character Info:
Name: Destre
Age: 17
Gender: male
Rank: Deckhand, future Candidate
Location: at sea most of the time on the Golden Lady. Make berth on the coastline near High Reaches.
Family:
Father- Alaverto (59) owns a cothold that produces brandy. Is a drunkard, though not necessarily a mean drunk, he tends to be a little silly.
Mother- Syra (55) works in the cothold with her husband and surviving children.
Siblings-
Esana (25) married to a nearby cotholder (has two children)
Wexor (23) works at the cothold, planning to take it over from his father soon.
Geana (22) engaged to marry a journeyman smith, who works at High Reaches Hold, used to be a local boy.
Fepher (20)works at the cothold under his father and brother
Isora (would be 19) deceased, died at the age of 11.
Seratal (15) works on the Golden Lady as Cabin Boy
Rebeno ( would be 13) deceased, died at age 5.
Calex (11) youngest child and least healthy though he does his share of work, no one expects him to survive to adulthood.
Appearance:
Destre is none too concerned for his appearance. As a sailor he was permitted to wear whatever he could afford to; mostly a loose white tunic and a pair of tattered black pants. His boots were shabby at best, usually second hand or even third. Though some of the older sailor’s took pity on his sore feet when he was younger, now they couldn’t care in the least. He was old enough to tough it out. He has his black hair long enough to be pulled back in a small pony tail. A red kerchief covers his head when it’s particularly sunny and when it isn’t, the kerchief is around his neck.
Though he is well muscled from being on a ship, he takes no real notice of his strength. He cannot say that hard work never gave him anything as the Captain would tell him. He is a tall man. Destre stands at six foot three and is still growing at seventeen. If he gets any taller he’ll easily be the tallest man on the ship and one of the taller men on Pern. Destre also has a tan over his upper body. His face is also tanned and wind burned.
His golden eyes (reminiscent of a hawk’s) show only that he has seen far more than a boy his age should have seen. There is an unspoken wisdom there. Though one would call him attractive it wouldn’t be in a usual way. His eyebrows are dark and thick and his cheekbones no more high than the average person’s might be. His eyelashes are thick and dark much like his eyebrows and hair. He had a straight nose, until he got himself beat up, now its slightly crooked. His mouth is usually in a secretive smile. Something that would remind one of the Mona Lisa, which can almost seem to be mocking you.
Personality:
Destre since he was a young boy, had always been determined to have whatever he desired to have. Even with his little brother tagging along, he could be stubborn to a fault. If someone told him not to do something but he wanted to do it, he did it, regardless of the consequences of the action. He was not known to be a reckless child but he ended up in plenty of trouble by not listening to the advice of others. He was always the first person to know what they wanted. Destre didn’t doubt easily what he believed to be true. That of course went two ways. His faith in things would not be easily shaken, however he was not one to change even if changing was the right thing to do.
As he grew older he learned that not all things were given to you. At the cothold he had to work and work hard for his meals. On the Golden Lady things were no different. He knew the value of a job well done more than just the reward of food and lodging. Something in him felt good when he accomplished a task. Even now he works as hard as he can to be indespensible to the ship and so that he can feel he has given one hundred percent to a task.
The cool and calm Destre, has been a steadfast type his entire life. When the road gets rocky, one knows that Destre won’t abandon it. He faces life with an air of confidence and calm that is usually seen in older people. A seventeen turn old with this sort of calmness is a rare find. It is like he thinks over every situation and doesn’t overreact. He learned that lesson long ago. Overreacting didn’t change what was going to happen, it only made things worse for you. His dislike for change does not prevent him from being unruffled in tight or hectic situations. Perhaps that was a lesson given to him by the sea herself.
All things on the planet are real and tangible. There are no firelizards, dragons have a purpose and shipfish are a sailor’s tale to keep people who fall into the sea from panicking. In fact, Destre doesn’t believe anything that would seem impractical. He is a very pragmatic person. Silly tales sung by harpers do no more than impress children and the illeducated or dimmest of people on Pern. He finds that things that are silly are not worth his time. Even so, a good joke never harmed anyone. Although he is a realist and cometimes a party pooper, he can be fun when he wants to.
Destre enjoys a good joke and a good ale. He would never drink so much as to get drunk, since he has seen first hand what a vile person that changes men into. He is also fairly good at poker though he rarely plays or bets. The other sailors don’t like him to win and they most certainly don’t like him to have their hard earned money. Sometimes he enjoys watching. Mostly he prefers to stay clear when they play and has a chat with his brother. He, like any sailor , uses his time on land to his best interest. Although he and his brother are kept under close surveillance, it doesn’t stop Destre from wandering around and finding female companions now and again. He isn’t a cassanova but he does like women.
Destre is a fairly agreeable person who tries to stay clear of trouble. Unfortunately he seems to end up in trouble anyway. Some of that is due to being stubborn, some of it is due to him being young and still more of it is due to him being a poor sailor too lowly for most people to even look at. This gives drunk dimglows a few reasons to start fights with the youth. Also the sailors get angry with him at times and start things. The Captain gets easily irritated by this sort of behavior so Destre has done all he can to avoid it in the future.
History:
Destre was the sixth child born to a large family. His father was a brandy maker who ran his own cothold not far from High Reaches main Hold. The boy was mothered well until he was strong enough to help with little chores. By then his brother was the one being babied and he was beginning to see that the world no longer revolved around his wants. This irritated him at first. Why shouldn’t the world revolve around him?
The stubborn youth caught on quickly enough. If one did not work, one did not eat. Destre liked to eat so he decided he liked to work. After a while he realized he liked to accomplish things as much as get fed. Though he was one of the strongest of his siblings it became apparent that even with a good harvest, their father was not making enough marks to keep them all fed well. Rations started to decrease and though there were nights they went hungry, he knew his family did want him and they wanted him to be healthy. His mother was a loving person and though his father was often drunk and silly he too cared about them.
As time passed, Destre found his true confidant to be his younger brother, Seratal. While the boy tended to be a bit more dreamy than he himself was, he admired him as much as the boy seemed to admire Destre. They were very close and even shared the same chores so that they could finish more quickly. Even Destre appreciated how much more could get done when you worked as a group. At the age of nine, crops failed almost entirely. His large family had grown to a total of eleven people. Their youngest brother, was about three.
Their father was out late drinking one night, they knew because he smelled of ale and of walked non too well. He was followed by a man with a weathered appearance and a set of level eyes. Apparently his father in his infinite wisdom sold Destre and Seratol to the man. Their mother, instead of protesting as Destre would assume she should have, woke the pair of them up and made them dress quickly. They each only brought with them what they were wearing. Their mother explained before they went out to face the man, “Darlings, your big boys now. I expect you to behave and prove to me I raised you to be good men. You are going with the Captain there and your going to work on his ship.” With that she kissed them both in turn and pushed them out of the doorway and towards the Captain.
At first, Destre was determined not to like the man though it seemed the Captain took more of a liking to his younger brother. Seratal became cabin boy for the Golden Lady and Destre was learning the ways of a sailor as a deckhand. The sailors took to him fairly easily as Destre seemed more than willing to do his share of the work. For a boy of nine it was hardly the same amount as the full grown men. Then again a boy ate less than a fully grown man did, so perhaps the Captain had gotten two boys for just that reason.
While they didn’t always have the same jobs on the ship, Destre always tried to remain in contact or visual sight of his brother. He didn’t want anyone to hurt him. After all they were in this together. The two of them against the world or against the path the world had set them on. Even and especially during the roughest storms, he tried to look out for the only person who mattered to him.
Again, time passed, as with all children, he began to grow up. Destre was as always stubborn and one night while they were on shore he ended up in a fairly bad fight. He was defending the ship and of course, the other sailors were in on it too. A fight between members of two different vessels was not uncommon. What was uncommon was for Destre to drink as much as he had, and for the other sailors to lose sight of the fact that he was only thirteen. It was during this fight that he had broken his nose. Never again would he drink as he had that night. That may have been partially due to the headache the next day or the nose ache, or even perhaps the throwing up all night and into the morning.
Whatever the case, he has always been much better about his alcohol intake. If he ever had a lesson to learn he learned it the hard way. While Destre was still a young man, he was beginning to go through puberty. He caught himself watching women when they made berth, the way the other sailors did. Although he tried to look away before they noticed, they most often caught him blushing. When he was fifteen, he met a young woman who did in fact make him into a man. At least in the eyes of the crew that’s what it did. He didn’t have the guts to tell or maybe he thought it improper but they knew anyway.
At sixteen he had already been growing like a weed and seemed to grow out of clothes as soon as he got them. The Captain was running out of things to give him to wear. He had grown taller than most the men on the ship by then and was fast becoming a man. He ate more than most the men on the ship too. Now that he is seventeen, the Captain is beginning to wonder if its no longer a good investment to keep the older brother, however he still wants the younger as his cabin boy while he can keep him.
After being Searched by a strange woman on a blue dragon, Destre was let in on a little known secret. Once known, one could never go back to the life before. This secret was too big for the Dragonriders to allow that. He was brought from High Reaches to a secret Weyr on the Southern Continent. He knew very little about the area but it seemed nice enough. There were many fishing Holds surrounding the Weyr, which meant even if he didn't impress, he could still serve as a sailor.
His fourth day at the Weyr was just starting when the humming came. He wasn't exactly sure, which way to go so instead of fighting the crowds he followed them. Somehow making it to the correct place, he was given white robes to throw ontop of his other clothes. On the sands he felt a little nervous but it dissipated quickly. These other young men and women were standing he could to. His courage was only amplified by a smile adn a wave from his younger brother, Seratol.
When his brother impressed, he didn't think he could be any happier. S'rtol of blue Quinsyth. He smiled just thinking about it. Lost in his thoughts it took him a while to be paying attention again. There were few eggs left. Luckily for him the largest one had just hatched and was heading down the line of Candidates. Destre could tell he was thinking over them all. Smart dragon, weighing his options. This was the most important decision a dragon could make. If Destre was a dragon he would be taking this very seriously.
The Bronze came to stop before him. Eyes locking with his swirling blue meeting gold. Ah, D'tre, there you are. Keebrith hungers, now come, Mine. When D'tre took a moment the dragon reiterated he was hungry. "His name is KEEBRITH!" With that, D'tre and Keebrith went to find food, and even more as their adventure of Weyrlinghood was about to begin.
]Dragon Info:
Name: Keebrith
Age: newly hatched
Color: Bronze
Appearance:
Keebrith is strong in not just mind but in body. He's got thick neck, large paws, muscular shoulders. His hide is shades of bronze, and he's very metallic. He carries himself well, and tall, looking the part of a commanding officer. He will be slower in flight, but his strength will be his endurance and his resistance to pain.
Personality:
Keebrith's name comes from Keel and Bridge of a ship. The keep is the main strength of a ship, and a bridge is where the commands come from. Keebrith is both a strong willed and commanding dragon. He is cautious, and always deliberates on decisions. He never asks, he always just orders. He's steady, strong, and perhaps one day wise. He's more serious than playful, and is not ever silly. He can be quite critical.
History:
The nineteenth egg started to rock and tremble. It was one of the larger two eggs, and no one could doubt what was inside. At last the egg burst apart, and left in the shards of the mottled egg stood a dripping bronze. He was bulkier and sturdier rather than lithe and graceful. With each determined step the bronze took, the little bit his hide dried. The skin declared his true color was bronze, if his sheer size did not. The bronze was masculine built, with thicker neck and strong shoulders, his paws were large and promised large size, his claws were coppery-bronze. His hide was gradient between dark, dusky hues and brighter metallic sheens.
The bronze walked slowly to the lines of candidates, looking at each one. Finally, the bronze paused on one boy and he rumbled with happiness, Ah, D'tre, there you are. Keebrith hungers, now come, Mine. The bronze lumbered on with out waiting for the former deck hand to awknowledge him. Before my brothers and sisters eat my share, Mine.
