Character Info:
Name: Nerilan
Age: 17 (Born in 851)
Gender: Female
Rank: Candidate
Location Weyr
Family:
Father: Udon(51) Owner of a large portion of a minor hold. Udon is burly and fierce looking, but is friendly and tolerant, if not a tad silly.
Mother: Malona(47) Refined and haughty, brought up in a wealthy family. Was courted by Udon and eventually became his wife. She is hopelessly in love with him, despite her cold personality.
Siblings (oldest to youngest):
Ardenal(27) Firstborn, Ardenal is charming, charismatic, and a bit vain. He is married and has two small children, works on a plot of land near his father's.
-Nerilan
Lawdon(15) Shy and submissive, Lawdon works for his father in the fields.
Penally(12) Fiery spirited and unwilling to be tamed, reluctantly helps Malona with cooking, cleaning, etc. Travels to Harper Hall shortly before Nerilan's search.
Appearance: Nerilan is tall--standing just at 5'9"--and has a thin, delicate frame with moderate curves. Most of her height comes from her legs, for she is rather long limbed. Unlike most women who have worked hard all their lives, Nerilan lacks much in the area of muscle. She's rather scrawny and frail looking. Her skin is light and pallid; she burns easily in the sun--the smallest bit of sun exposure can get her a terrible burn--and hardly tans, no matter how much exposure she gets. On her left thigh is a large--about two inches long--birthmark that is roughly diamond shaped.
Her face is pointed and angular, with high, prominent cheekbones. Straight dirty blonde hair frames her delicate face and used to go down to mid back, but she's cut most of it off so that it reaches only her chin. It mingles nicely with her emerald eyes that peek out from behind long, dark lashes; it is in her eyes where her feelings are betrayed, where she has the most personality, appearance wise. They reflect her emotions, whether she be angry or lonely, mirthful or melancholic, almost like a window to her very heart and soul. Between her green eyes, she has a long, straight nose and a small, discreet smile. Her teeth are relatively straight on top, but crooked on the bottom. Also, her teeth are much less white that desirable--due the the effects of a fever she had early on in life that damaged her teeth , they are more of a dull grey. Because of this, she rarely smiles.
Nerilan prefers skirts over pants, but does not object to wearing either; her favorite is light, billowing tunics. Her favorite color is green, blue closely following, but enjoys simple colors such as browns and blacks. She stays away from bright colors altogether.

Personality: Nerilan is more than just a pretty face, more than the silent, subservient woman that she allows people to see; while she is obedient and respectful of those who hold authority over her, Nerilan is much more intelligent and spirited than people give her credit for. Beneath that guise of timorousness and low self confidence is a strong, sophisticated woman who will not allow herself to be tamed so easily. Always, she is planning for the future, preparing for the worst. Her caution is her method of self defense; she is keenly aware of her surrounding environment, always wary and on guard from force of habit; trusting is hard for Nerilan. She knows what she wants in life, knows what her goal is, and anything that might endanger what she is gradually working towards is perceived as a threat, an obstacle to work around. She is an adept problem solver, having a creative and insightful mind. Being a very determined individual, Nerilan is not easily swayed from a task that is set out for her, and will politely refuse any help if offered--people had proved not to be reliable in the past and Nerilan sees no reason as to why that might change.
Yet that part of her is simply the outer core of her personality; her more relaxed self, revealed to those she knows as friends or even acquaintances, is truly what defines her: Nerilan is not haughty and cold like her mother; she is friendly and--although she is not the most talkative of women--genuinely cares for the well being of her friends, despite her difficulty in allowing herself to trust. She has a burning desire to help people, for she understands the emotional pain and insecurity that many feel for a long period in their lives. She is an avid listener due to her respectful nature, which is why people can feel at ease around her.
However, Nerilan has a great deal of trouble sharing her own problems; unless she has a close friend whom she feels at ease around, she will bottle up her emotions and cause herself unneeded amounts of stress--all because she finds it extremely embarrassing to admit weakness. She tends to be distrustful of all people--even friends--after living a life where trust got you no where. Nerilan, having grown up in a sheltered life, is naive and has much to learn about life outside manners and social status. She is as fragile as she appears, unaccustomed to any work harder than cooking or cleaning. She extremely inexperienced when it comes to men and flirtatious behavior, so different than the strict formality that Krellin displayed. Luckily for Nerilan, there is a simple solution to her problem: Experience. She is uneasy in general with all people, but is improving gradually.
History: Udon was a successful young holder who owned a farm under Harlem Hold, a minor hold near Nabol. Malona was a prim, proper young woman raised in a wealthy house at Nabol hold. The two had met at Turnover and immediately took an extreme liking to one another. After that night, Udon began to court Malona and eventually proposed to her, after asking permission from her parents. They refused at first, but when he presented them with gifts to display his success, they had a change of heart. Soon afterwards, Udon and Malona were wed.
Nearly a year later, Ardenal was born--he would grow up to be charismatic and successful, the spitting image of his father. Nerilan was the next child to come, but it would be ten more years before she was born. She was born in winter, near the end of the turn, as a healthy baby; her first cries were loud and strong. As a small child, she was pampered and taken good care of. She was a bubbly, friendly child who loved to play with her jovial father. Her mother, however, wanted to raise Nerilan as she had been raised, to become a beautiful, refined woman and a strong wife. Malona would be stern with Nerilan and began educating her from the start, ever so subtly. Malona would not allow her women friends--or anyone else for that matter--to speak to Nerilan like a child; She stressed the importance of proper grammar to her daughter, who quickly caught on. By the time Nerilan was three, she spoke well--much clearer than the other children she played with; of this, Nerilan was blissfully unaware.
As Nerilan grew older, Malona grew more strict with her daughter. Playing was discouraged; instead, Nerilan spent her time learning manners, cooking, weaving, and other skills a proper wife would need. She was taught to be submissive, taught to respect and obey her future husband. Malona made it clear that women, especially young women, were inferior and needed to act that way. Nerilan did as she was told, but never quite understood why. Even so, she simply played her part as a subservient daughter knowing that any rebellious behavior would result in punishment. As she matured and continued to understand just how bleak her future was--the life of a holder woman was not the exciting life she imagined as a child--she grew worried; her future was not in her hands, and that bothered her. Was she doomed to live a dull life of routine and social status?
But Nerilan had inherited her mother's intelligence and spirit. She vowed to herself that she would not be so easily tamed, and that she would make a life for herself when the opportunity arose. As for now, she had thought, she would continue to do her mother's bidding in order to stay out of trouble. Yet from then on, she paid closer attention to Malona's lessons, thinking that the skills she would acquire could help her make a life for herself. At this point in her life, Nerilan was fourteen turns old.
During those fourteen turns, her two younger siblings has been born--Lawdon and Penally. Lawdon had been born only two years after Nerilan and the two had become quite close as they shared nearly the same age and similar personalities. Like Nerilan, Lawdon was quiet and submissive, but he lacked the spirit and ambition of his older sister, although he lived a freer life. Nerilan felt at ease around her brother and often voiced her true thoughts to him and her hopes of something more than the plans Malona had for her. Lawdon understood her and she understood him, although he never vented about his problems with her. Even so, Nerilan could see that Lawdon lacked self confidence and was uncomfortable around people. Lawdon was easy to read. This worried Nerilan so she subtly tried to inspire him and encourage him to socialize in hopes that it would help secure his future. But her efforts seemed to be in vain, for Lawdon showed no signs of improving; his timid personality would follow him to adulthood and he would end up working for his father after failing to provide for himself.
Penally was the exact opposite of Lawdon and similar to Ardenal in almost every way. She was loud, vivacious, and fiery-spirited. Like Nerilan, she had inherited her mother's strong personality, but did not hide it. She paid little attention to her lessons, despite the severe punishments for her rambunctious behavior. In constant tension with Malona, Penally grew even more rebellious and angry, flat out refusing to live the life Malona had set for her. Luckily for Penally, she was blessed with a sweet, melodic voice; Eventually, a few months before Nerilan has been searched, Malona gave up on her daughter and send her to the Harper Hall at the age of 12. Penally would be welcomed, despite her gender.
Nerilan was not as lucky as her sister or her older brother, who had staked out a plot of land and started his own cothold; He was happily married and his wife was expecting their first child. Nerilan had been courted by numerous men by this time and her parents had accepted the proposal of Krellin, a high class holder who had offered gifts of jewelry and livestock to impress Udon and Malona. And so, in the summer of 866, Krellin and Nerilan were wed. She went to live with him at his cothold, which was also under Harlem Hold. Upon arrival, she met Krellin's widowed sister Telles; the two became fast friends in the years to come.
At first, marriage was not as bad as Nerilan had speculated. She did not love Krellin, but was relatively happy. Krellin was kind and often sought her affections... perhaps a little too much. When it became clear that Nerilan was not so easily wooed by his doting and refused to love him, Krellin began to grow bitter. Gradually, what little friendship the two had disappeared and life worsened for Nerilan. Krellin did not beat her, but acted cold and scornful at her. He was strict and preferred that she stayed at the hold, except to go to the market--he feared that she would leave him, so he made sure she was not running about alone by sending a drudge along to "help" her. It was Telles that kept her sane during the hours of isolation, for the woman had an infectious personality and could easily brighten a room. Suddenly, Nerilan was struck with the memory of her brother and realized just how much Telles reminded her of him. Nerilan began telling Telles of her ambitions and was supported whole heartedly by her friend. The two began to plot together, discussing their options...
...but the future is a mystery and plans do not always carry out as speculated. Telles met a man named Rolden, and after their friendship escalated to something more, Telles was suddenly engaged. Nerilan was overjoyed for her friend--Telles was always somber when relationships were mentioned, obviously still mourning the loss of her first husband; remarrying would be good for her--but was now at loss of what to do. She was alone now, lacking allies. Telles's departure had been difficult for her, especially because Krellin had been attached to his sister and grew even more bitter and possessive when she left. Nerilan considered simply running away, perhaps steal some food and a runnerbeast, but that seemed too brash. She reminded herself not to be hasty and plan her escape to insure a pleasant future. However, the future seemed bleak...
