It was mid-evening, and Rukbat was struggling to keep its glorious life-giving rays in the Weyr. Evening was truly the time for leisure; after the day's work had been finished, what else was there to do? The young man that lay there with his dragon watched the lengthining shadows thoughtfully. He had nothing else to do, as he had already tucked his young daughter into bed--Manna had gone to sleep without a fuss-- and had finished all of his work for that day.
"Alright," the man said, grinning the insane grin he always wore when he knew he would stump his dragon. "I've got a new joke for you."
Ask it.[/b] The large Brown said, shifting himself so that he could rest his head on the ground. One gigantic eye was trained on his rider, waiting for the question.
The man's smile widened. "Here goes:
"Why was six afraid of seven?"
The great Brown closed a layer of his eye, deep in thought. He was unmoving, undeciding. Then his tail flicked. The man looked at his dragon, thinking about the answer the dragon would give him. This continued for little more than a minute before he grew exasperated. "Aw come on!" He cried, "You always think too hard about these things!"
Fine. The dragon said, fully closing his eye. Go ahead, B'oone. Tell me the answer.[/b]
B'oone's grin couldn't have widened even if he tried to make it. "If you don't want to hear it..."
No, I want to hear it. Please.[/b] The Brown said, wanting to know.
"Well, the answer is this: Six was afraid of seven because seven eight nine." B'oone laughed. The answer was so simple! Brennanth snorted. That's all?[/b] B'oone nodded. "That's the answer."
Then Brennanth growled, How could seven eat nine?[/b]
Still laughing, B'oone said, "No, silly, seven didn't eat nine, you are counting. Seven, eight, nine!" He demonstrated by holding up fingers while he counted.
Brennanth's brow furrowed. So six, seven, eight, nine? But why was six afraid of seven if we're just counting?[/b]
There B'oone grunted. "Brennanth, sometimes you're too much. It's just a joke, it's not supposed to make sense."
Brennanth wanted his point to be known. Six would have to be afraid of seven for other reasons, too, right? Suppose six is thread--[/b] "But it's not Thread" --and seven is a dragonrider--[/b] "But seven isn't a dragonrider" --so why would six be afraid of seven if it ate nine instead of--[/b] "By Faranth's egg, Brennanth! You think too much!"
But Brennanth still continued, devising new ways why six was afraid of seven...

Jinet and Isisth saw B'oone and his brown laing there in the grass Did you hear B'oone's joke I don't think it was very funny, do you? Jinet looked at Isisth and put her finger on her lips as if to sush her Isisth that's not very nice even if it was a bad joke.
Jinet walked over to the two of them "So seven, eight, nine huh? Well if you don't mind me saying that one is old as the hills."
Jinet sat down next to him and smiled "So what else is there to do around her except enjoy the warm weather" Isisth then laid next to her and curled her tail around Jinet

B'oone looked up distractedly when a voice interrupted his thoughts. He knew this woman, she was the rider of a Green dragon... Isisth[/b] Brennanth told his rider... and a nice person. Or so B'oone thought. He looked up at her and smiled wryly. "I know it's as old as the hills, but Brennanth has never heard of it. I wanted to stump him, and stump him I have."
Brennanth gave out a low snort. That is not true. I have not been stumped! I am still figuring it out![/b]
"Yes, my dear, you are figuring it out, but I have already told you the answer." B'oone said, still smiling. He patted the brown hide at his back. Then, at Jinet's query, B'oone shrugged. "I don't suppose there is much else to do when it is warm out. Brennanth here likes the water, but he's already gone for a swim. I guess all there is to do now is talk."
The brown dragon snorted, but said nothing. He was still contemplating the answer to 'Why was six afraid of seven?'

Jinet looked at him and giggled at bit then untied her boots and took them off. "So B'oone if you don't think it to bold for me to say your rather cute" She stoped and blushed, she turned back to him"I think I met someone the other day that belonged to you, a little girl her name started m... I think."
Isisth twitched her tail and turned her head toward B'oone's brown How are you this fine day?

B'oone looked at Jinet and laughed. "A lot of women, and men for that matter, have called me cute. I beg your pardon, but I don't really take heed of the fancies of the people around me except for when Brennanth chases."
Then he shrugged, "But I guess it's time for me to settle down once in a while." Then he smiled at Jinet's giggles. "When does your Green rise?"
Brennanth, however, was not listening to His. He knew His needed 'alone' time once in a while. Instead, he purred, or a close approximation of it, to Isisth. I am fine, today, Isisth. And you?[/b]
Almost as an afterthought B'oone said, "And yes, I have a daughter, Manna... but she is merely my adopted daughter. She was my brother's daughter, and I adopted her when both he and her mother were killed. She didn't do anything wrong, did she?"

Jinet looked at B'oone and smiled "Well the last time Isisth raised was about... I think maybe six months ago so I guess she will be soon why do you ask?" She knew right away why he was asking her but she still wanted to hear it from him anyway.
Isisth looked back at Brennanth and purred "I'm fine, I glad to see that Jinet is making friends. She hasn't really talked to many people since what had happened back at Telgar"
Jinet looked toward the water, waiting for him to respond "Oh and no she didn't do anything wrong i was just wondering if she was yours she is a rather bouncy little girl."

"Why did I ask?" B'oone asked absentmindedly. "Because I wanted to see if Brennanth would chase." B'oone eyed Brennanth, and the brown dragon grunted. It was neither a yes or a no. He needed to see if Isisth was good enough first.
Do you think I'm thinking too hard? About the question I mean. Why was six afraid of seven? I think six was some sort of wherry... Brennanth zoned off. He neither acknowledged the green dragon's query nor said anything against it. But he did flick his tail. His rider had been like that, too.
"And Manna is always bouncy. I don't think there would ever be a day when she isn't going to be bouncy and outgoing." After a small silence, B'oone said, "I love that girl."

Jinet looked at B'oone "Well what did you brown say?" Jinet smiled at him "So I told you what I think of you what do you think of me?"
Isisth heard him grunt and looked at him and growl What was that grunt all about? Am I not good enough for you? She looked at him and her eyes turned a redish yellow in anger.
Jinet turned her head back to the water and smiled waiting for him to reply.

Brennanth was taken aback. Oh, no, lovely Isisth! You, my dear, are my type, I didn't mean that grunt bad-naturedly. I was just thinking on things other than mating chases at this point. I'm still thinking about why six was afraid of seven![/b] He turned his gently-swirling pink-tinted (a little bit lust-filled) eyes upon the green dragon.
B'oone rolled his eyes at his dragon. "That rolling of eyes was not meant toward you, Jinet, but toward my dragon. Your dragon may tell you if she deems it necessary to tell you." Then, after a faint moment of silence, B'oone hummed. "I think you're neat, Jinet. You are rather cute for a female, not sizing you up against anyone. I like your eyes. And I like your personality. You are nice, really." And your dragon, Isisth, is very pretty too.[/b] Brennanth told Jinet directly.

Isisth looked at Brennanth, her eyes still a little reddish You know it's not that hard to figure out. He was just counting, lovely. She stopped for a second as her eyes changed to a lustful purple. Now would you forget about the joke and tell me more about your type.
Jinet looked at her dragon to his her blushing form him. She saw the color of her dragons eyes and rolled her eyes then turned back to B'oone "Well it looks like they already like each other, also tell Brennanth thank you." Jinet looked at the brown and smiled. "So you really think I'm cute and have a nice personalty?" Jinet face turned beet red as the thought of leaning over to kiss him came to her mind but she thought better of it.

Brennanth's pink-tinged eyes grew an even deeper violet color, but nevertheless he nodded his acceptance of Jinet's 'thank you.' B'oone almost stuck out his tongue, but thought better of it. Of course I will forget about the question. For you, Isisth, wonderful Green.[/b] B'oone frowned. "You didn't even have to think about the question in the first place, my love!" Brennanth ignored him. My type...[/b] Brennanth thought for a second, long enough to make B'oone impatient. I like Golds, but the possibility of me catching them is slim, at best. And I like Greens, but not super flirty ones. I guess it really just counts on if I want to Chase the day they rise. But Blues usually Fly Greens, and though I'm larger, I usually get left out.[/b]
B'oone nodded grimly. Brennanth was so large that he was not nearly as agile as his smaller counterparts. B'oone took Jinet in. She would have looked a little better as a brunette, but the redhead-edness suited her. He smiled as she tried to conceal a blush. "Of course I think you're cute." He was about to add 'but that doesn't mean much to me,' but that would not have been taken as a joke, and she probably would have slapped him. B'oone had had too many slaps across the face. "And you have a great personality, one to match your dragon's perfectly, I'd say!"
Then, more of an innocent question than not, B'oone asked, "What do you see in me?"

Isisth's eyes continued to change to an even darker purple Well you may chase me if you want, but isn't also up to me to chose who I want Isisth paused and curled her tail around Jinet as if to protect her. I myself only have ever like one blue and he and his rider stayed at telgar, I find blue to be somewhat annoying if I do say so myself. No, I have always like browns myself and I'm not saying that to butter you up hun.
Jinet looked at her dragon's tail and raised an eyebrow "It looks like someone is trying to keep me form getting to close to you." she pointed to her dragons and tail and smiled "Well what I see in you. One you suck at telling jokes, just kidding." She looked at him up and down "Well the stubble on your face make you look kinda rugged ...........but I like it,. I love the smile it's cute, you eyes make me want to stare into them forever...I like brown eyes..." She looked at him in the eyes and blushed "What else would you like to know?"

Brennanth hummed. That is nice, lovely green. If you had not liked Browns, then I would not have tried to chase you in the future.
B'oone thought for a second. "What else would I like to know?" He asked absentmindedly. "I would like to know why you wanted to travel back in time to Nova Weyr."

Isisth heard the question B'oone had asked Jinet and looked at Brennanth This might be the first time she ever told anybody what happen that she chose to leave her home, so there might be water works Isisth nudged Jinet go one tell him He will not hate you Isisth looked back at Brennanth Anyway my lovely brown would you really chase me
Jinet looked away from B'oone and took a deep breath then turned back as tears ran do her cheek "Well you have to promise you will not hate if I tell you the real reason I left home to come here." She looked at him and wiped another tear form her face.

Brennanth twisted his head around to stare at His with a ferocity that matched a queen's. You will not prod her too much, you hear! If I think she's said enough, I will tell you. B'oone, surprised at his dragon's sudden rage, soothed Brennanth with a You will need not tell me anything. Rather, I will know myself.
Then, aloud, B'oone said slowly, and with as much emotion as he could allow, "I would like to hear why you came back in time, and I will not hate you. Instead, if you tell me, I will tell you about myself." He made himself a promise to tell her about himself even if she choked up when explaining about herself. He needed to get that weight off of his shoulders.
Brennanth cooed, a sort of sound uncommon in a male dragon's throat. It sounded like the purr of an abnormally large cat. It seemed his momentary anger was gone. He swung his head back toward the wonderful green and said, If you ever wanted me to chase you, I would.[/b]
