Creamy skin. Shaky hand. Letters that are only beautiful because they have been written over and over and over.
I fear dragonkind is at an end. There is but one golden egg on the sands, and the the mother has left us for the cold of between. The other bronzeriders and myself cannot agree on Setter's future, and every meeting seems to go nowhere but an argument. I do sincerely believe that within the next few Turns, the dragons riders will be no more.
Was the Red Star moved away? Yes. But it still circled Rukbat, it still came close to Pern, the interval was just longer and the years it fell shorter. Dragonkind had lived peacefully on Pern but the population had declined. The clutches had begun to grow larger when the Red Star first came, but no one could fathom why.
Then Thread fell. All Pern became was one bloody mess. So many fields and animals were killed. The dragonriders were unprepared as were the people of Pern. It was massacre. After the Threadfall of only 15 Turns, the planet was decimated and struggling to survive. Only three Queens survived.
The dragon gene pool was very small after this event. It was from here that new colors were presumably born. Alas, the new colors did not help the situation...only one could clutch, and only after its first flight. So the dragons left combined into one weyr, Setter Weyr, and fought for their survival. It seems to have come to nothing. The Queens were few and few...and now, 500 Turns later, the Red Star has been sighted drawing nearer to Pern. The last Weyrwoman, Ulieta, committed suicide in face of the hopelessness, but her dragon resisted going between for her eggs.
Unfortunately, the clutch that hatched brought anything but hope. The gold turned out to be strangely male, a green dragon was murdered on the sands, and the world of Pern is crumbling apart. A faction of the Weyr, led by the challenging bronzerider A'syr, is now planning an near suicidal attempt to bring Pern back to glory, even as the former weyrleader forbids him to do anything that might endanger other riders.

They placed too much trust in AIVAS.
