Character Info:
Name:
Hysiae
Age:
30
Gender:
Female
Rank:
Headwoman of Nova
Location
Nova Weyr
Family:
Hysiae's family is very large, and most of it is not important. Therefor, it has been very edited.
Foster Mother
Yashma, 64, Headwoman of Telgar
Close Siblings:
Foster Sibs
Kethraz, Foster Sister, 39, Cook
Blood Sibs:
Siana, Sister, 39, Laundry Worker
Children:
None yet, possibly none ever.
Appearance:
Hysiae doesn't look middle aged, although she is. Mischievous light brown eyes, in a tanned and freckled face, with light pink lips, a generous mouth, sharply defined cheekbones and eyebrows lend her an air of someone at least five turns junior. Sometimes more, other times less. And while she tries to emulate her Foster mother, and act as though power is her cloak, and wear it, most of the time that fails.
Occasionally, she succeeds, and is powerful and commanding, but in the normal course of things, there would have been more time before she became Headwoman to learn to assume power.
She's fairly tall, at 5'8'', with lean muscle, and slight curves. Not one to flaunt her sexuality openly, despite the prevailing trends of the Weyrs, she wears simple clothing that emphasis nothing, and wears pants as often as she wears skirts and dresses. She like colors that are softer, feeling that it makes her hair- a rich tumbled brown, stand out more, and reds, because they make them look good as well. She has exactly two sets of fancy clothing that fits those tastes- a lovely wine red dress, and a lavender skirt with a pale blue top. Everything else is made for work and to be easy to clean.
She has only a single piece of jewelry. It's a necklace with a simple shiny chain and a piece of rough cut green and yellow stone. She rarely wears it, not wanting to lose the jewelry she had to scrimp and save to afford.
Personality:
One cannot be the daughter(even a foster daughter) of the Headwoman without learning a thing or two about power dynamics. And while nearly every single one of her siblings chose not to do anything with their lessons, Hysiae had ambition, and intelligence, and she chose to be powerful.
Her first choice was to Impress the Queen that was sure to come, and her second to become a Headwoman just like her mother. She had no other plan, but if neither of those had worked out, it is entirely possible she would have somehow managed to marry an heir or Lord of a Hold. Hysiae likes being in charge, and she'll make sure that she gets it. She didn't get her dragon, something she has never forgiven Neory for. Normally, she just grins and bares it, but secretly she hopes the the serious, commanding Goldrider from Igen will take the Weyrleadership away from the Telgarian girl. It would be fitting, or so the Headwoman feels.
Sometimes she feels proud to be the first Headwoman of Nova. Other days, she bemoans that she will never become Headwoman of Telgar, were their is easy hot water, enough people for all the jobs, and Weyrlings to run her errands. Nova has potential however, and most days Hysiae is content with that. Until something happens that could have never happened in Telgar that bothers her.
Siae is not a big fan of children. Most are loud, messy, silly, with thieving hands, and irritating giggles. Thus far, Siae has avoided having one, despite quite a bit of pressure, and has even managed to avoid fostering(though that took taking on quite a few extra duties). She hopes that as Headwoman she can avoid both pressure and ever having to deal with children for anything other than superficial points of time.
Not exactly friendly, Siae doesn't have any close friends. She hardly has friends at all. However, as mated to power as she is, it's hardly a hardship. And she's had her share of lovers, but none were compelling enough to give up her power for. It's lonely, but one hardly has time to be lonely when one is always working.
She punishes and rewards equally, and is capable of repealing former judgments if given a bit(a large bit) of incentive. And really, all she wants is a well run Weyr, no matter what she has to do to create one.
History:
Born to the Weyr by two very busy parents, one a greenrider, the other a crafter, and was fostered off as soon as she was weaned. She went through three different foster mothers before fitting with one perfectly, and then remained with that foster mother until she was grown, moving into a shared room when she was eighteen.
She was a good child, interested in how her mother, the Headwoman Yashma ruled her section of the Weyr. She was fascinated by the dragons, mostly the Queens, who, even the old Gold Beynath showed off how powerful they were, and the bronzes who postured and peered, trying to prove how powerful they were. Even, to a lesser extent, she enjoyed how the browns and blues did the same sort of preening for a green.
And she wanted a Gold all to herself. While a Green's sexuality got her power over men, Siae wanted power over men, women, and Dragon's as well. And to do that, she needed a Gold of her own. So she worked hard, studying, training under her mother, taking the candidate classes even when their was no Queen, and taking the risk of Impressing Green, and stood at each Hatching. Nothing touched her desire for Dragons, not even the offers of a Wingsecond Brownrider who wanted to be her Weyrmate and give her everything.
And when the Senior Queen Clutched a Queen, Siae was beside herself with glee. This was her chance, after turns of waiting, denying herself everything, now was her chance to Ride Gold. Only to have it snatched away by Neory, another Weyrbrat. Not Impressing Sheluth wiped Siae out for nearly a turn. Here had been her one, and probably only, chance to Impress, and she'd blown it. Sheluth hadn't even had a chance to pass her over, going straight to Neory.
And then, she'd thrown herself into the Lower Caverns concerns, politics, and power struggles, and worked them so that she ended up on top, using all of the power she grabbed to both do better than whoever had formerly held the position, and do her best to make people either like her better, or respect her more. In this way, two of her sisters, one foster, the other by blood, helped her the most. While she had never been very close to anyone, her early bonds with her curious blood sister, and her vivacious foster sister allowed her to come talk to them, and know that both of them, lacking in ambition, would not betray her. And through their counsel, her own observations, and hard work, she moved up into the position of Headwoman's Assistant. She was twenty seven turns old.
For three more turns, she worked hard, watching as her foster mother began to favor her, and realized, that as Yashma grew older, she was actually contemplating retiring, and with a hard joy, Hysiae knew that she was going to be the Headwoman. She was going to take what Sheluth had denied her, and for the first time in turns she was content and happy, and it was then that she was called to a meeting. It had a odd group together, all of people she recognized except an odd pairing of two that wore the power as Marisol had, the way Elisha did, and the same with Yashma. They were obviously powerful, Hysiae just didn't know who they were.
And she was informed that she was to be Headwoman, yes, but of a Weyr that may or may not last past it's mission(to be a breeding farm) in complete secret. She couldn't deny it, and Hysiae knew that her chance at taking the Telgarian Headwomanship was over, so she complied gracefully, and took over the ragtag group now that they've arrived. The new Weyr is rough hew, probably made by the crafters of Star Hold whenever they had a chance. For her, it's hardly habitable, but she's working on it, the main areas at least, trying to make it a better, and thus more productive place to live.
Having not had a chance for a real meeting with the Weyrwomans and their Weyrseconds, and having heard that the powerful couple from the meeting are Junior Weyrwoman Laszreen and Weyrsecond J'var, Hysiae has taken a liking to both of them, merely because they represent change and difference. How that will play out is anyone's guess.
