Character Info:
Name: Amala, also known as Ama
Age: 14
Gender: female
Rank: candidate/cook's apprentice
Location She was at Star Hold from the age of 2, but has recently been relocated to Nova Weyr
Family:
Father: Miner Nash (50)
Mother: Amalira (48)
Brother: Brownrider A’mash (29) Impressed at Telgar, Sheluth’s first
Brother: Journeyman Miner Nasham (27)
Brother: Journeyman Healer Lirash (25)
Sister: Nalira, wife and mother, (24)
Brother: Journeyman Smith Sham (23)
Sister: Candidate Nashira (19)
Brother: Candidate Liran (17)
Brother: Candidate Ranash (15)
Sister: Amana (12)
Brother: Manirsh (10)
Appearance: She has a small face framed with long, blackish brown hair that is almost always loose, and has the same symmetrical part (probably permanent now). She does like to braid her hair when she's in the kitchen, though she does little else to it other than wash it. Her skin isn't exactly pale, more of an olive color, and her wide, expressive eyes have a much darker tone than her sister Nashira's. Her full lips are often pursed in a scowl or a pout.
Amala stands at about 5'5, and may indeed spurt another inch or two before she's done. She likes to wear clothes that fit her well, so that her sleeves don't drag or her skirts don't get caught. Things that could prove dangerous in the kitchen. She likes to wear dark blues and silvers best, though there is something to say about pairing red and gold. Ama is growing to be quite a woman, and her tighter clothes are starting to prove that, though she is oblivious of it, and finds glances from boys a little annoying at times, if not confusing.
Personality: Amala is the kind of person who says what every one is thinking. She's not politically correct, and speaks very plainly. It is safe to say that Amala is blunt, and she's not afraid to tell you what's on her mind. For this, many people think she's rude, but really, she's just brutally honest. Amala's never told a lie, and she never needed to. The truth always got her in enough trouble. As much as her sister Nashira tried to teach the younger girl manners, Amala just listened to make the elder happy. Nothing really stuck. Amala is only polite if she's being sarcastic or she's particularly vengeful.
Amala's got a smart mouth, and because she's not one to hold her tongue, she's gotten punished a lot. She doesn't really care any more, but she'll complain and mumble with the best of them. Amala found her talent after being sent to the kitchens for punishment. Eventually, with some teaching, Amala's smart mouth may well turn into witty, but for now she's more than a touch childish. Amala's got a temper, but it's a cool sort, she's not one for shouting, rather, getting back in her own ways. Like public humiliation.
History: Her father was born to an unwed crafter's daughter. He was product of a passionate and secret liason with a visiting dragonrider. Nash grew up to a miner, quite skilled at his craft, actually, and well on his way to becoming a Master. His family, including his sons were very proud of him. Some one had heard of his skill from his weyrling son, A’mash, and mentioned it to someone else, until it got to the ears of the Telgar riders planning trip South. Young A’mash, who had Impressed from Sheluth’s first clutch, had to attest to what he said, in front several important people. They believed him and decided to find him.
Nash had spent some time at Telgar Weyr, in fact, his wife was from there. It wasn’t hard to catch him there, nor was it difficult to convince him that the land of promise was South. Nash’s eldest sons, A’mash and Nasham, were both settled in their ways- A’mash was a weyrling and Nasham was an apprentice miner. They would stay were they were, but the rest of the already big family would go South.
Growing up with plenty of brothers and sisters to play with was nice. Two more siblings were born after their arrival at Star Hold. Since their mother was often busy helping to get the Hold in working order, Ama's older sister Nashira often watched the growing brood. Nashira fell into the mother rold quite easily, and made sure the siblings were all fed properly and were behaving properly. Nashira attempted to drill some manners into Amala, who seemed to have trouble holding her tongue. Amala obeyed Nashira because she respected her sister, however, as soon as the older girl was out of earshot, Amala's mouth couldn't be tamed. Ama was often punished because of it.
Amala found her talent after being sent to the kitchens for punishment. One of the cooks noticed the girl's knack for baking and remembering recipes. Amala was a good worker if she had something challenging to keep her mind on. Cooking provided her with a plethora of learning possibilities. When the chef brought Amala to the Head Cook, the woman agreed she would be taken into staff and trained to be a cook. For once, some one saw some potential in her. It was an illuminating feeling.
Then, less than a turn later, Riders came to the hold, rather demanding that all the children between 12 and 21 be presented for Search. Perhaps they had a right to demand, they were, after all, at Star Hold for this Weyr mission. Maybe they didn't demand, but some unhappy mothers put that spin on the story. Amala didn't think she would be taken, not when she was finally happy in her new niche. They wouldn't want her, there would be reports on how she was a trouble maker, and they would reject her. Right?
Wrong. The riders took one look at her and deemed her worthy to stand for a dragon. With some whining, crying, and negotiating on the part of Star Hold Head Cook, Amala would be taken to the Weyr to be a candidate, but she would also study under the Head Cook there. Ama was still certain she would not Impress. Also taken were calm, maternal Nashira, and her brothers, Liran and Ranash. It wouldn't be so terrible, adjusting to her new life, not if her family was there.
